How to Clean Water Bottles Effectively

How often do you clean your water bottle? Do you know how important it is to sanitize the water bottle every day?

Everyone uses a Water Bottle to stay hydrated all day. As you know, we use water bottle every day in the office, schools, colleges, and the gym and in various other places. However, in such public places, the environment is really polluted.

Research shows that germs and bacteria can build up in the moist environment of the water bottle which leads to gastroenteritis and food poisoning. Moreover, the bottle also becomes smelly and can develop molds. Also, in the current situation (Covid19), it is necessary to sanitize all the things that come in contact with your face and your water bottle is one of those things that directly comes in contact with your mouth. Therefore, it is an open invitation for corona virus to enter in your body. Thus, to take precautions, you have to clean your water bottle daily.

Ways to clean water bottle effectively

1. Use Liquid Dish Soap and Water

Add a few drops of liquid dish soap and add warm water or hot water to your bottle then place the cap on your bottle. (Remember use hot water if the bottle is made up of metals, stainless steel and glass & if the bottle is made up of plastic then use warm water). After this, shake the water bottle with soap and water for minimum 20 seconds and then dump the soapy water out of the bottle and rinse your bottle with warm water. Then scrub the bottle and bottle cap properly from outside and inside. For outside cleaning, use dish sponge and for inside cleaning try to use water bottle brush. You will also need to ensure that the bottle brush has gone inside the bottle.

After scrubbing, rinse your water bottle with warm water, and leave your water bottle to open air dry. Do it in evening so you can leave it out overnight to air dry. If you clean your bottle in the morning and you are in a hurry, wipe it nicely with a towel. Make sure that, water bottle is completely dry.

2. Use Distilled White Vinegar

To get your metal bottle extra clean, always use distilled white vinegar. Vinegar is the best cleaner and disinfectant because it is made from acetic acid. Also, it is nontoxic and eco-friendly and cheap.  White vinegar contains 5% acid similar to other cleaners and it is the best cleaner because it doesn’t contain coloring agent, so it is stain-free as compared to other type of vinegar that leaves stains on the surface. Vinegar is an effective cleaner of stainless steel and glass.

Fill 1/5th portion of your bottle with white vinegar and add water (make sure vinegar is diluted with water as it is necessary for safety and avoiding damage). After this, shake the bottle for at least 20 seconds and leave it with vinegar overnight and then the next day rinse the water bottle and the lid with hot water and wipe it dry with a clean cloth. As Vinegar is acidic in nature, it can dissolve mineral deposits from glass.

3. Use Baking Soda and Bleach

Baking soda is used for many purposes in the kitchen. One of the uses is for cleaning. Baking soda (Sodium bicarbonate) also acts as a cleaning agent. It removes the stains and also eliminates the foul odors.

Bleaching powder (Calcium hypochlorite) is also used for household cleaning. It is a cleaning agent mainly used for water treatment. It is used as a disinfectant which is used for disinfecting water to make it drinkable.

You can use baking soda and bleach for extra precautions because many times your bottle might be used by many people. So, it is important to wash your bottle every day with baking soda and bleach. Use a teaspoon of baking soda and bleach powder, mix it well then fill it with cool water and use this mixture to scrub the bottle and bottle’s cap from inside and outside. Scrub gently otherwise it damages the bottle. Leave the bottle overnight and then rinse thoroughly with warm water next day and wipe it dry.

4. Use Dishwasher

If you have water bottle made of metal, stainless steel, and glass then you can use a dishwasher. For safety, you can check the label on the bottle to make sure if it is safe to put in the dishwasher or not. Then place the water bottle upside down in the dishwasher without lid, with the mouth facing downward, and run the bottle gently through the dishwasher. After that, rinse the water bottle again and wipe it with a clean cloth.

5. Use water bottle cleaning tablets

If you don’t want to clean the water bottle as per above method, then you can use the water bottle cleaning tablets. Take a tablet, pour it into the bottle, and then pour warm water into that water bottle. Mix it well and shake the water bottle, then leave it for 10 minutes. After that, remove the water and wash the bottle thoroughly with warm water.

To clean the water bottle, you need the following items:-

  • Liquid dish soap
  • Bottle brush
  • Bleach Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Water bottle cleaning tablets
  • Dishwasher

Note:- Keep in mind that bacteria builds up in a moist environment, so make sure you wipe the water bottle dry. If you let your bottle air-dry overnight, make sure you have removed the cap of the bottle. Otherwise, it will create a moist environment and it will give birth to new bacteria.

To prevent yourself from water diseases, clean your water bottle daily and avoid the build-up of germs, bacteria and viruses inside it. Use good quality reusable water bottles, like bottles made up from metal, stainless steel, glass and high-quality plastic bottles.
