Pros and Cons of Ceramic & Stainless Steel Cookware

Pros and Cons of Ceramic & Stainless Steel Cookware

When it comes to the types of cookware, the options are endless. Whether you want non-stick, or do you want something durable and long-lasting with even heat distribution. Many other variables determine what kind of pots or pans are perfect for your household and your cooking style. Cast iron, Teflon non-stick, aluminum, copper, and lots of other materials are common in kitchens these days. Today we're doing a shootout between two of the favorite types of cookware, i.e., Stainless Steel and Ceramic.

There is a lot of difference between the two types of materials. The obvious ones being, Ceramic is non-stick and stainless steel isn't. However, stainless steel has a better heat distribution and can take all the abuse the owner throws. You must be careful with the heat settings in a ceramic pot or pan because caution must be practiced to protect the enamel. But then there is the cook's experience since Ceramic is better suited for beginners, whereas anybody with some experience can get great results from stainless steel.

Ceramic Cookware Pros

Toxic Free: For cookware that is very efficiently non-stick, ceramic shines over its peers since it is also non-toxic. Most non-stick cookware on the market is coated with Teflon, which after a certain point of being heated, it emits poisonous fumes both in the air around it and in the food. Free from lead, cadmium, or PFOA, Ceramic is ideal for people who really don't want to negotiate with the non-stick nature of their cookware.

Easy to Clean: This is one thing you definitely want from your pan. If you cook a lot, you seldom want to spend any time scrubbing the food from the pans. Ceramic is not only super non-stick, but those qualities come in handy when it comes to cleaning as well. A simple wipe of a wet cloth is oftentimes enough to clean a ceramic pan.

Affordable: Ceramic pans, for the benefits they provide without any toxic hazards, are priced very well. Comparative prices are attractive if you're looking to buy a new set of non-stick cookware; Ceramic might be the ideal way to go!

Ceramic Cookware Cons

Short Lifespan: Although they are very convenient to use, ceramic pots and pans don't have a really long life cycle before they need to be replaced. The top cooking coating wears off, and the pan starts becoming sticky even with lots of oil added.

Flimsy and Delicate: If your ceramic cookware piece isn't tri-ply, chances are it will be very flimsy and hard to handle. These delicate pieces need to be handled with care. On the flip side, though, some people prefer lighter pans.

Non-Friendly to Metal Utensils: if you want your cooking surface to last longer, metal utensils are a big no. You cannot risk scratching the surface of the non-stick ceramic cookware by using metal utensils. Instead, you must use wood or silicone utensils.

Stainless Steel Pros

Tolerant to High Heats: Stainless steel cookware is some of the most versatile cookware pieces in the kitchen. They adjust to changes in temperature like no other material. They heat up quickly and can tolerate really high heat.

No Health Concerns: Just like Ceramic, you don't have to worry about any adverse health effects from stainless steel. It has no toxic properties, and unlike cast iron, it doesn't rust when reacting with acidic foods like tomatoes, alcohol, or fish.

Easy to Maintain: Stainless steel is straightforward to maintain and easy to clean! It also doesn't need to be seasoned regularly like a cast iron pan for non-stick properties.

Stainless Steel Cons

Not Non-Stick: Non-stick cookware is big in popularity these days. Everybody enjoys the convenience it provides in cooking and cleaning, and this is somewhere stainless steel falls short.

Hard to Clean: This point is right in conjecture with the above point. Because it's not non-stick, cleaning stainless steel cookware is a hassle. You really have to scrub the pan to get rid of stuck food.

Inconsistent Cooking Performance: It requires some cooking skills and experience to consistently deliver fantastic dishes. Stainless steel is very random in terms of absorbing heat and losing it.
